Get acquainted with an important emerging field in this FIG cluster! Digital Humanities sits at the intersection of computing and the humanities – using the humanities to critically reflect on our use of digital tools and the social implications of new technologies, while also using web programming and other computing tools to produce and present humanities knowledge in exciting new ways. The courses in this FIG also both count towards a Minor in Digital Humanities.

Humanities 110: What are the Humanities?

Description

Instructor: Tony Prichard

An interdisciplinary, conceptual and historical introduction to the humanities and to questions animating multiple disciplines of humanistic study (for example, literature, history, philosophy, art history, religious studies, etc.). Course themes and case studies will vary depending on faculty expertise.

Description

Instructor: Justice Banson

This course teaches Internet skills, emphasizing the Internet as a medium of political, business communication, cultural and the basic principles of effective web site organization and design. Students will learn how to create static pages and how to implement designs consistent with web standards and best practices. Students will also learn about tools and technologies of modern responsive web design using HTML5 and CSS3; an introduction to JavaScript.

An introductory seminar offering an exploration of academic content and essential questions within the liberal arts and sciences tradition. Includes embedded instruction in academic skills and use of campus resources pertinent to exploration of the FIG cluster theme. Concludes in a formal paper or academic presentation. FIG seminars are linked to FIG clusters or GUR strands. Repeatable under different topics.
