FIG #18 The Salish Sea
In this FIG, we will experience the Salish Sea through different disciplinary approaches by reading Coast Salish authors and stories of place, learning about regional ecology, digging into layers of geology and history in the area, examining local issues of justice and equity, and more. We will engage in experiential learning activities like walking tours, scavenger hunts, debates, and storytelling.

Description
Instructor: Eli Loomis
This place-based and interdisciplinary course introduces students to the complex ecologies and human experiences of the Salish Sea region, an international body of water that is governed by the United States, Canada, and over 60 Tribes and First Nations. Students will learn content in the areas of natural and social sciences, and Indigenous ways of knowing, while learning process based skills in inquiry and critical thinking, problem-solving, multimedia project development, and tools for advocacy and policy engagement. The course will also integrate experiential learning through local field trips and optional regional field trips, including cross-border experiences.

An introductory seminar offering an exploration of academic content and essential questions within the liberal arts and sciences tradition. Includes embedded instruction in academic skills and use of campus resources pertinent to exploration of the FIG cluster theme. Concludes in a formal paper or academic presentation. FIG seminars are linked to FIG clusters or GUR strands. Repeatable under different topics.
